Radiators, baseboard or radiant: what actually heats an old Columbia County house
Three ways to deliver heat from a boiler, and what each one is actually like to live with once the installer has left.

A boiler only makes hot water. What actually heats the rooms is whatever the hot water is pushed through, and in a house this old that is usually one of three things: cast iron radiators, fin tube baseboard, or in newer additions and renovations, radiant floor tubing. None of the three is simply better than the others. Each one behaves differently to live with day to day and differently when it needs a service call, and a lot of houses in this county end up running two of the three at once because they were added onto over the decades rather than built all at one time.
Cast iron radiators
If the house still has its original cast iron radiators, they are probably older than anyone living in it, and that is not a bad thing. Cast iron holds heat and releases it slowly, which is why a room heated by a radiator feels steadier than one heated by forced air, without the on-off swing. The tradeoffs are size, since a radiator takes up wall space a baseboard run does not, and air. A radiator that has gone cold or is only warm at the bottom almost always has air trapped in it, and bleeding it with a radiator key is a five minute job most homeowners can do themselves once shown how. Steam-heated radiators, common in the oldest housing stock, work on a different principle again and should not be bled the same way a hot water radiator is.
European panel radiators
For a room being redone, a European panel radiator does the same job as cast iron in a fraction of the wall footprint and with a more finished look, while still running on the same hot water loop. They heat up faster than cast iron and cool down faster too, which some homeowners prefer and others do not. They are a straightforward swap onto existing hydronic piping, which is why they show up so often in kitchen and bathroom remodels where a bulky old radiator no longer fits the plan.
Fin tube baseboard
Baseboard heat runs hot water through a finned copper tube inside a low metal enclosure along the floor, and it is the most common thing we find in additions and mid-century houses in this county. It is cheaper to install than radiators room for room and disappears visually along the baseboard line. The common complaint is a cold draft near the floor in a room the baseboard cannot quite keep up with, usually a sign the run is undersized for that room's heat loss rather than a flaw in baseboard heat itself. A ticking or banging sound as the metal enclosure expands and contracts while heating up is normal and not a sign anything is wrong.
Radiant floor heat
Radiant tubing under the floor delivers heat from the ground up, which is the most even and, for a lot of people, the most comfortable way to heat a room, especially over tile or stone. The catch is retrofitting it into a house that was not built for it. Getting tubing under an existing floor in an old house usually means either lifting the floor, adding height with a thin overlay system, or running it from below if the ceiling underneath is being opened up anyway. It makes the most sense in a full renovation or an addition being built from scratch, and much less sense as a retrofit into a finished room you are not otherwise touching.
One pipe versus two pipe hot water systems
Old hot water radiator systems in this county tend to be one of two layouts. A one pipe system loops all the radiators off a single supply and return line, which is simpler to install but means the last radiator on the loop gets water that has already given up some of its heat to the ones before it, often the reason one room in an old house never quite gets as warm as the rest. A two pipe system runs a dedicated return for every radiator, which balances more evenly but costs more to install and is harder to add to after the fact. Knowing which one a house has explains a lot about why certain rooms behave the way they do, and it changes what a fix for an underperforming room actually looks like.
Why a lot of houses end up running more than one
It is common in this county to find a house with cast iron radiators on the original rooms and baseboard on a later addition, all fed from the same boiler on separate zones. That is not a mismatch, it is just the honest result of a house getting built onto over decades. What matters is that each zone is balanced for what it is actually heating, not that every room in the house uses the same emitter.
What service actually looks like for each
Cast iron radiators mostly need bleeding when a room goes cold and, less often, a valve replaced when one starts weeping at the packing. Baseboard needs its fins kept clear of dust and furniture, since a blocked fin tube throws far less heat into the room than a clean one even though the boiler is working exactly as hard. Radiant needs the least routine attention day to day, since the tubing itself has no moving parts, but a leak inside a slab or under a floor is a much bigger job to find and fix than a leak at an exposed radiator valve. None of the three is maintenance-free. Each one just asks for a different kind of attention.
